PM Surya Ghar:
Muft Bijli Yojana
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is an initiative launched by the Government of India to provide up to 300 units of free monthly electricity to one crore households. Homeowners can access up to ₹78,000 in subsidies for rooftop solar installations and secure collateral-free, low-interest loans to cover the remaining setup costs.
Introduction
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a groundbreaking, massive-scale renewable energy initiative launched by the Government of India. Aimed at transforming the country's energy landscape, this project has an investment allocation of over ₹75,000 crores and seeks to empower 1 crore households across the nation by encouraging the adoption of rooftop solar systems. By transitioning millions of families from mere electricity consumers to clean energy producers, the government is taking a major step toward building an energy-secure, green future.
Key Features and Benefits
- Free Electricity: Eligible beneficiary households are entitled to receive up to 300 units of free electricity every month.
- Financial Subsidies: The scheme provides direct financial assistance to make renewable energy affordable. Subsidies are structured as follows:
- For a residential rooftop solar system in Odisha, you can receive both Central and Odisha government assistance under PM Surya Ghar.
Plant size Central subsidy Odisha subsidy Total support 1 kW ₹30,000 ₹25,000 ₹55,000 2 kW ₹60,000 ₹50,000 ₹1,10,000 3 kW or more ₹78,000 ₹60,000 ₹1,38,000 The subsidy is capped at 3 kW; installing a larger system does not increase these amounts. This Odisha-specific table was confirmed by MNRE in Parliament on 3 February 2026.
- Income Generation: Not only do households save on their monthly utility bills, but any surplus electricity generated can also be sold back to the local grid, allowing families to earn an estimated ₹15,000 to ₹18,000 annually.
- Easy Financing: To lower the barrier to entry, the scheme offers access to collateral-free, low-interest (around 7%) loans for the installation of solar systems up to 3 kW.
